Boston Apothecary Store script. Click photo and "Detailed Description".
This is truly a unique piece which has been in my collection for many years. It is a 20cent store script. It is titled Mount Pleasant / Apothecary Store / Eustis St." This piece measures 4" x 2 1/4" and is dated at the bottom "Roxbury, Jan. 1st 1863". During the Civil War there was a shortage of coins, so local establishments would have these scripts printed up and were redeemable at their store when making purchases. This "check" could be used at both the Apothecary Store on Eustis Street and at the Book Store of W.H. Piper on Washington Street in Boston. It would look great framed with a period picture.
