Matched pair of Civil War era Leather Hooded Stirrups. Click photo and "Detailed Description".
This is a matched pair of Civil War era leather hooded stirrups, the type commonly used with the McClellan saddle. The stirrup frames, the type, grain and appearance of the leather, the method of attaching the hoods with iron nails, and the evidence of wear are identical on both stirrups. The leather is slightly worn in parts, but solid.
The wood stirrups measure 6 ¾” high x 5 ¾” wide x 2 ½” deep. One is wrapped with what appears to be a black tape, but it may even be thin brittle leather which can easily be removed if desired. The overall dimensions with the hood measures 10 ¼” x 8 ½” x 5”. The hoods are a brownish thick leather with an embossed motif of a leave inside chain links.
This pair of field used stirrups has a great visual appeal and all of the historical flavor spanning the battlefields of the Civil War to the campaign trails of the post war frontier. I left them just as they were found from being in storage for many, many years. They can be cleaned if desired but I’ll let the new owner decide on that. Nowadays it is rare to find a matched set of hooded stirrups. They would go great with a Cavalry or Officers display.
