Civil War era "School House" Inkwell. Click photo and "Detailed Description".
School House shaped "Snap-top" aqua inkwell. The jagged top is not a flaw, but the result of how they were made and crudely snapped off. It measures 2" x 1 1/2" x 2 1/4" high. There was a rapid increase in the consumption of ink during the Civil War, accompanied by the required bottles and inkwells to store the ink. Excluding slaves, the population of the United States enjoyed having one of the highest literacy levels in the world.
This bottle is in very nice condition, showing the unique crudeness of antique glass. These inkwells go great with a display of soldiers personal effects, (particularly nice along side a letter).
