Section of an Artillery Hotchkiss Shell recovered at Gettysburg. Click photo and "Detailed Description". (SOLD)
This is a nose section of a 3-inch Hotchkiss Shell which measures 3 1/2" x 2". The threads for the fuse still remain on the top, as well as a flame groove on the side. This piece was recovered on the Gettysburg Battlefield and was fired by a 3-inch Ordance Rifle. These guns were sturdy and reliable and superior to the 10-pounder Parrott rifles. At Gettysburg, 146 (41%) of General Meade's 300 guns were 3-inch Ordnance Rifles. Also the Confederacy had many of these same guns and ammunition which were previously captured from the Union. The piece has been coated for preservation and is marked "GETTYSBURG". Take adantage to add a "true" piece of Gettysburg history to your collection. I have similar examples of these shells in my book "Battle of Gettysburg - The Relics, Artifacts & Souvenirs", also available on the site. (SOLD)
