Section of an exploded artillery shell recovered at Culps Hill, Gettysburg. Click photo and "Detailed Description". (ON HOLD)
This is a section of a U.S./C.S. 3 inch 10-pounder shell section that was recovered years ago on Culp's Hill, Gettysburg. In the pictures you can see it next to what the full shell looked like. It measures approximately 3 1/2" x 2 1/4". Culp's Hill was a critical part of the Union army defensive line, the right flank, or "barbed" portion of what is described as the "fish-hook" line. Holding the hill was by itself unimportant because its heavily wooded sides made it unsuitable for artillery placement, but its loss would have been catastrophic to the Union army. It dominated Cemetery Hill and the Baltimore Pike, the latter being critical for keeping the Union army supplied and for blocking any Confederate advance on Baltimore or even Washington. This piece has been coated for preservation and is marked "CULP'S HILL". Take advantage to add a "true" piece of Gettysburg history to your collection. Similar pieces are also in my book "Battle of Gettysburg - The Relics, Artifacts & Souvenirs", which is also available. (ON HOLD)
