Rare 1863 dated Document for clothing following Battle of Chancellorsville. Click photo and "Detailed Description".
This is another rare item being offered from the collection of documents from Captain Robert P. Wilson of the 16th New York Infantry and the 6th Corps. This is a Clothing Acquisition document which is being submitted to General Joseph Bartlett for approval. It is being submitted to Captain Robert P. Wilson, who is the Assistant Adjutant General under General Bartlett. It is one sheet, written in old brown ink on one side, and measures 10" x 8".
On the top of the document is "Quartermasters Department 2d Brig. / May 7th 1863". It states that the regimental quartermasters sent in the clothing estimates needed for their individual units, stating "....today 27th NY Vols did not call for any, 16th NY very light, it is mostly for the 3 remaining regiments". It also states that he would also like to have the general approve the passes. On the bottom left is Captain Wilson's name and on the right is signed by "W.H. Daniels / Capt A.Q.M". William H. Daniels enlisted in the 16th New York Infantry as a corporal as soon as war broke out, on April 18th, 1861. Only a year later he was promoted to Captain and Assitant Quartermaster.
This requisition was for clothing to resupply the troops who just came out of the battles of Chancellorsville and Salem Church, where General Bartlett's 6th Corps had losses of almost 5,000 men. Two months later they would find themselves in the Battle of Gettysburg. This document is in very nice condition and being one page would look great professionally framed. Records for Wilson and Daniels from the American Civil War Database are also included.
