Camp Pot Hook recovered at Cedar Creek. Click photo and "Detailed Description".
This is a hand-forged iron Camp Pot Hook. When laying flat it measures approximately 10" x 8". These hooks would be placed over a campfire and a cooking pot would hang from it. It was recovered from a campsite at the Cedar Creek Battlefield.
At dawn, October 19, 1864, the Confederate Army of the Valley under General Jubal A. Early, surprised the Federal army at Cedar Creek and routed the VIII and XIX Corps. General Philip Sheridan arrived from Winchester to rally his troops, and, in the afternoon, launched a crushing counterattack, which recovered the battlefield. Sheridan’s victory at Cedar Creek broke the back of the Confederate army in the Shenandoah Valley. It would make a nice addition to a camp display or part of a soldiers personal effects.
