Letter written by 2nd Lieutenant Francis P. Dale of Company H, 3rd Ohio Infantry and dated July 22, 1864. Click photo and "Detailed Description". (SOLD)
This letter was written by 2nd Lieutenant Francis P. Dale of Company H, 3rd Ohio Infantry. It is written in ink on one sheet, front and back, and was originally folded to fit in an envelope. He wrote the letter from New York on July 22nd, 1864. It is sent to a girl back home named Kate who is living in Newark, Ohio and it appears that he is very interested in her and might be waiting for a response to see if she is receptive to his advances.
He states that he was very happy to hear of his brothers safety and good fortune (probably also serving in the military). He says that she doesn't have to worry about him taking a wife where he is and that his only interest is that girl back in Ohio [Kate]. He asks if she remembers the time he spent the entire night at her house and it made him "very, very happy". He goes on to say "But the cruel war came over us and placed new and awful experiences before our ways and eyes and here we are today distant". He ends with that he is "...going to bed and dream per chance of you" and signs it "F.P. Dale".
This is a great letter and beautifully written and easy to read. It does need further research to see if he ever did get back to Kate and she became his wife. This letter is in very nice condition and would make a great addition to any collection. A photo copy of a photograph of Lieutenant Dale taken in Newark, Ohio is included. (SOLD)
