Horseshoe recovered from Dunker Church in 1955. Click photo and "Detailed Description". (SOLD)
Civil War Horseshoe from Antietam. This horseshoe measures approximately 5” x 4 ½”. On the back of the horseshoe is “Dunker Ch. / 1955”. It was recovered at the Dunker Church on the Antietam Battlefield in 1955 (see period photograph).
During the early morning hours of September 17, 1862, furious conflicts swirled here as the Union Army made several attempts to break the Confederate left flank. Union Generals Hooker, Mansfield, and Sumner would launch successive attacks toward the Confederates positioned on the slight high ground upon which this church rested. The Battle of Antietam would become the single bloodiest day of the American Civil War and all of American military history, seeing nearly 23,000 casualties. The inconclusive but strategic Union victory partially politically enabled Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
The horseshoe remains in very nice condition and it is just as it was found…even having some remnants of the original dirt. The area around the Dunker Church seen some of the heaviest fighting during the battle. The church was used as a makeshift field hospital during and after the battle. This is a great piece with an even greater location. (SOLD)
