Brass Eating Plate and Spoon from Confederate Camp. Click photo and "Detailed Description". (SOLD)
Civil War soldier’s brass Mess Plate and spoon. The plate has a diameter of approximately 9 ½” and the spoon is about 8” long. The plate is in several pieces, just as it was recovered with the spoon in the same hole at a Confederate campsite in Wartrace, Tennessee.
Following the Battle of Stones River (Dec. 31, 1862 – Jan. 2, 1863), Major General William S. Rosecrans, commanding the Army of the Cumberland, remained in the Murfreesboro area for five and one-half months. To counter the Yankees, General Braxton Bragg, commander of the Army of Tennessee, established a fortified line along the Duck River from Shelbyville to Wartrace, Tennessee.
Out of all the Civil War mess gear, the plates are the most difficult to find, and even rarer to find dug examples (see Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War, by Stanley Phillips). This is a rare opportunity to acquire some mess gear from one of General Bragg’s men. Also included is the 16” x 12” glass top display case. (SOLD)
