Civil War Two-Cent Coin. Click photo and "Detailed Description".
This is a 2-cent copper coin. On one side is "2 Cents", surrounded by "United States of America". On the reverse is a shield with "1865" below it. There is a crude hole which was punched through this coin. I have read that it was a common practice for soldiers trying to stash away a little extra for emergencies. Several years ago, it was discovered that sewn on the inside lining of a Civil War jacket, was a strip of linen with several coins. The coin is worn, but the date and identifying marks can still be made out.
