Early wood Gettysburg Souvenir Book. Click photo and "Detailed Description".
Early Gettysburg souvenir book, circa 1920's - 1930's. The covers and spine are made of varnished wood, tied together. On the front cover is a picture of the Gettysburg commanders, General George G. Meade for the Union and General Robert E. Lee for the Confederacy. Near the bottom is "Souvenir / Gettysburg, PA. / July 1, 2, 3, 1863". It is said that the wood used for these souvenir books was acquired from the Gettysburg Battlefield. Inside the book are heavy-stock color photographs from around the battlefield, with their descriptions on the back of the cards.
I have used one of these types of souvenirs in my recent book "Battle of Gettysburg - The Relics, Artifacts & Souvenirs", (see pictures). This unique piece remains in very nice condition. These early Gettysburg souvenirs are very collectible and becoming difficult to acquire.
