Original Civil War era Binoculars/Field Glasses. Click picture and "Detailed Description". SOLD
This is another nice item being offered, it is a pair of Civil War era Binoculars (or Field Glasses). They are made of brass with a thin leather covering. In the closed position, they measure approximately 5” x 5” x 2 ½”. Overall they are in very nice condition, only showing normal use. Some of the original brass shows through and there is a tiny ding in the metal near one of the eye pieces. The optics seem to be fine. I cannot find any markings on the glasses which would be common for the Civil War period.
Most optical instruments of the Civil War era were made in France or Germany; they had the technology where the U.S. was still lacking. These Field Glasses were popular with officers and cavalrymen, and would usually be carried in their haversack or saddle bags.
These Field Glasses would really go well with a display of an officers, cavalryman or soldiers personal effects. Period binoculars in this condition are very difficult to find, so take advantage to add it to your Civil War collection. SOLD
