Artillery limber lock recovered from battlefield. Click picture and detailed description.
Civil War era Pad Lock. It is made of iron with a brass key plate and measures approximately 3" x 5". It is frozen in the open position. A lock of this size would probably be used on a limber or ammunition chest, rather then for personal use. There are examples of this type of lock in Civil War Artifacts - A Guide for the Historian, by Howard Crouch. This lock was recovered on private property at the Fredericksburg, Virginia Battlefield. This is a nice solid piece and has been coated with a varnish for preservation.
