Original Confederate Camp Axe. Click picture for details. (SOLD)
Civil War soldier's camp axe. It is the very rare small size, measuring 3 5/8" x 1 1/2". This small size made it easy to carry in a haversack or back pack. It was recovered on private property in a Confederate camp in Chesterfield, Virginia. There is a split on the hammer section....a sign of the inferior quality the Confederates were experiencing; this is probably why the soldier discarded it. The larger axe heads are a common find in Civil War camps, but this very rare small size is truly unique. It would make a nice addition to a soldiers personal effects or in a camp display. (SOLD)
