Soldiers Brass Heart Heel Plate. See "Detailed description"
Civil War soldiers heel plate, which would be worn on his brogans or boots. It is made of brass and measures approximately 1 ¾” x 1 ½”, with a heart in the center and having three nail holes for attachment. They were used to try and sustain the life of the soldier’s shoes, because quite often when they were worn out he would have to wait a period of time for replacement. These unique items were not a regulation issue, but sold by the camp sutlers. They had several different designs, but the heart is the most difficult to find…..and the rarest. This example was recovered several years ago in Richmond, Virginia.
