Civil War Artillery chain, with hook. The overall measurement is 36", with each link measuring approximately 2 1/4" x 1". It was dug on private property out of an artillery gun emplacement in Hopewell, Virginia. In 1864-1865, General Grant directed the Siege of Petersburg from the front lawn of Appomattox Manor, overlooking the river. During this 10-month period, City Point served as a supply center for 100,000 Union soldiers and was one of the busiest seaports in the world. There is overall surface rust, but it is not flaking and remains very solid and stable. (SOLD)
