Confederate South Carolina coat size button from Culpepper, Virginia Battlefield. Click picture and "Detailed Description".
Confederate South Carolina coat size button. In Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons, by Alphaeus H. Albert, it is listed as SC13, #5. The front of the button is the South Carolina state seal, which is the palmetto tree and the reverse has the backmark "Wm. H. Smith & Co./ New York", which is one of the rarer backmarks for this button. The face of the button has a beautiful patina, with only a very slight push, hardly noticeable. The back has clear markings, no shank. This button was dug on private property at the Culpeper, Virginia Battlefield.
In the early 1860s, one of the most hotly contested area during the Civil Was was North-Central Virginia. Culpeper's strategic location made it a highly prized position for both sides and thus the county witnessed more troop movement than any location in the nation. Within the county, Grant headquartered, Lee camped, Jackson fought and Stuart wintered. In fact, there were more than 160 skirmishes in and around Culpeper during the Civil War. Like I said, this button is a real beauty and I will also include the glass top display case pictured.
