Civil War Hotchkiss Artillery shell. The 3-inch Hotchkiss shells were made in three pieces…the nose, the lead band (sabot), and the base cup. This section is the base cup and was recovered on private property at the Petersburg, Virginia Battlefield. What is unique about this item is that the original dirt from the battlefield still remains inside. The digger kept it just as it was found....a neat artifact.
