Remains of a Civil War soldiers brogans (shoes). Click photo and "Detailed Description".
Remains of a Civil War soldiers brogans (shoes). They were recovered in the damp soil along the Tennessee River, in Bridgeport, Alabama. Because of its location on both a rail line and the Tennessee River, Bridgeport was strategic during the Civil War. It was the site of a major skirmish on August 26, 1862, and numerous other small actions took place in the area throughout the war. Surviving brogans from the Civil War are very rare; the soil from the recovery site preserved much of the leather. I will also include the 12” x 8” x 2” glass-top display case pictured.
