Civil War Surgeons Invalid Cup. Click photo and "Detailed Description". (SOLD)
Civil War Surgeons Invalid Cup, typical of what would be found in almost every Civil War hospital, North and South. Badly wounded soldiers or amputees would have to be fed by hand. The nurse or orderly would fill the cup with water, broth or soup and slowly feed the bed ridden soldier by tilting it into his mouth, not worrying about it spilling. There is an example of this feeding cup at the Confederate hospital at Gordonsville, Virginia. The overall size is about 6 1/2" wide x 3" high. As expected with antique porcelain, there is some overall crackling in the finish. There are no chips or cracks and it has no markings, which is typical for the Civil War period. This is a great piece and has been in my private collection for many years. (SOLD)
