Revolver Cartridge Box, rare smaller size

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War Revolver Cartridge Box. These pistol cartridge boxes were made in three sizes to accommodate the many different calibers of arms in use. This is the smallest and rarest of the regulation sizes with the interior of the pocket measuring about 4 5/8” wide by 3” tall and about ½” deep (outside flap 5 ½” x 4”.

Troops would carry three of the six round packets of cartridges in the box, and the heavy leather construction, with double thickness on the front and back, would protect the fragile cartridges from damage by rough handling or from exposure to the weather. Both leather belt loops on the back are tight an intact.

This is an extremely nice example, with minimal amounts of cracking or flaking. The leather is still nice and flexible with tight stitching, no maker marks visible. It does have the asterisk shaped marks found on period leather goods; these are not markings but rather the impression left by the clamps used to hold the pieces together during the manufacturing process. Overall this is a fine to excellent example, and a size which is very difficult to find. A great display next to a revolver.
