Offered here is an early twentieth century postcard. It is in color which was very rare for the time period. It shows the famous John L. Burns – referred to as “The Citizen Hero of Gettysburg”. Over 75 years old at the time, he grabbed a musket and got in line with Union soldiers in the fighting against the Confederates during the Battle of Gettysburg. He was wounded three times during the conflict.
The postcard has Burns sitting at his home on the porch with a crutch beside him as he was recuperating from his wounds. On the right is a close up of the bronze statue of Burns which is on the battlefield. On the bottom of the card is “Copyright by W.H. Tipton”, the famous Gettysburg photographer who took the original photograph. A very rare and unused card, and it is in great condition. FREE SHIPPING
