Product Description

This is a rare Confederate button being offered, it is a coat-sized Mississippi Artillery button. It has a brass face that consists of a large raised star with a block letter “A” recessed into its center and the word “MISSISSIPPI” spelled out around the perimeters edge. The brass face is free of dings and dents and has a beautiful chocolate brown patina. The remnants of the gilt wash remains within the recessed “A” and around the edges of the raised star and the letters spelling Mississippi. This gold “outline” causes the details of this button to really stand out.

The button back and wire shank are made of brass, all of which is intact. There is a maker’s backmark in a recessed channel that reads, “HYDE & GOODRICH, N.O.” [New Orleans] The verbal history of this button is that it was excavated, however with close examination by a long time Civil War button collector, the feeling is that it is non-dug, or if anything, a very early pick up.

Like I said, this button is a real beauty – not often found in this condition. Very seldom do these buttons become available and when they do, they are usually over $1000.00. This is a great opportunity to add a very solid piece of Civil War history to your collection.
