Product Description

This is another nice item being offered which was part of a large Civil War collection I acquired; it is a U.S. Model 1864 Cartridge Box. It measures 7.2in. X 1.7in. X 5.2in. The Cartridge box has the "US" embossed on the outer flap. These boxes replace the use of the earlier ornamental brass U.S. box plate, but examples such as this still contained slots in the leather to add one on if desired – possibly done by the soldier himself.

This pattern has an inside flap covering the implements, plus second flap covering the tins. This was the last cartridge box for the rifled musket; weapon development was moving to breech loaders of smaller caliber. Belt straps are centered, sewn and riveted.  Latch tab is sewn and riveted, brass finial is pear shaped with a point.  Two iron roller buckles are sewn and riveted. When I acquired this particular box, the original cartridge tins were somewhat crushed inside the box. With a lot of coaxing and patience I finally got them out, but as you can see they are kind of bent up. I tried to straighten them as much as I could - one has a piece of the tin separated. I did not put them back in, leaving that up to the new owner - perhaps after working on them a little more.

A faint manufacturer mark is embossed on the back leather with “S.H. Young & Co. / Newark N.J.”. They had contracts with the government to produce leather cap boxes and cartridge boxes during the war. The front had an inspectors stamp in the corner of the front flap but only very little of the oval design remains.

Overall the leather is flexible but there were some signs of flaking to the front of the outside flap along with a small hole near the top. The box has been treated and it is now very displayable. Overall the box is intact with straps, latch tab, buckles and inner flaps. This is a great example and a real necessity for just about any Civil War collection.
