Complete Union Smoothside Canteen, with original strap (SOLD)

Out of Stock

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is an original Union U.S. Model 1858 smoothside canteen in complete and untouched condition. The body consists of two circular sections of pressed-tin, formed in an oblate spheroid pattern and soldered together at the rim. Fluid capacity of the canteen was three pints and its liquid contents were kept cool by means of a damp or wet wool cover.

The canteen is in attic condition, and is the type issued to thousands of Union soldiers during the war. It is referred to as a ‘New York Depot’ style canteen. It retains its original brown wool cover that is in good condition despite moderate surface dirt and minor wear. Even along the cover seam stitching is tight and strong.

Canteen has the original worn cloth sling tied in a knot – obviously that way since the war. It also has its original cork stopper and chain attached to the strap loop; the pewter spout has no markings.

This is a fine-looking US Model 1858 smoothside canteen and the type sought out by collectors. It is not a surplus example but one that definitely been through the war. I discuss these type canteens further in my book “The Civil War Canteen – Third Edition”. A canteen is always considered a “must have” for any Civil War collection.
