Civil War Surgeon's Ivory Tongue Depressor (SOLD)

Product Description

This is another unusually and rare item being offered, it is a Civil War Surgeon’s Tongue Depressor. It is made of ivory and measures 6” x 1”. This would have been an important instrument of any physician; usually the first examination of an ill soldier would be to check his mouth or throat for any abnormalities.

There is a very faint carving in this piece which appears to be initials “W X W” – obviously done by the surgeon to identify his instruments. There is an example of this tongue depressor in The National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Maryland (see pictures). This unique piece comes in the glass top display case pictured. (SOLD)
