Product Description

Civil War Surgeon’s Medical Cupping Glass. These glass cups were used for the 19th century “cupping” procedure. The clear glass cup measures approximately 2 ½” x 2 ½” and shows the signs of early glass, even having some air bubbles. It was believed that cupping or blistering was another way to rid the body of bad humors. This involved superficial incisions in the skin, after which the heated glass cup was applied. As the cup cooled, a vacuum was created, ridding the body of vapors and raising blisters. These practices, though attacked by the better educated physicians, were the standard at the time. It is in very nice condition with no chips or cracks…a great piece to add to a medical display.
