Product Description

Civil War Song Sheet. This popular Civil War song, “On! On! On! The Boys Came Marching” was composed by George W. Root at the end of the war. It is printed on thin paper and measures 6” x 9 ½”. The lyrics are about Union soldiers being released from Confederate prisons and returning home. One part goes “Oh! The war is over now, And we’er safe at home again, And the cause we starved and suffered for is won; But we never can forget”.

Sheets such as these with only the words would be handed out at local gatherings in towns and railroad stations so everyone could sing along with the bands in welcoming home both soldiers and prisoners of war. They were not designed as sheet music, but something which would be thrown out or discarded after the event. Needless to say, but surviving examples are rare and this one remains in pretty good condition and would look great framed.
