Product Description

This is an original page sketch from “The Soldier in Our Civil War”. The fantastic two volume set is a pictorial history of the Civil War from 1861 – 1865. It illustrated the valor of the soldier as displayed on the battlefield from sketches drawn by Forbes, Waud, Taylor, Beard, Becker, Lovie, Schell, Crane and numerous other eyewitnesses to the strife.

This sketch is titled “Refugees from Southern Missouri driven from their homes by the Confederate troops under General Van Dorn”, by Henry Lovie. The book itself is very rare and sells upwards of $1000.00 in very good condition. Published in 1893 there are very few complete volumes available. As with many of these early publications, and due to overall deterioration, the good pages were removed and framed as pieces of art.

I was able to acquire several of these prints that were part of a Civil War collection. Over 50 years ago they were individually placed on thin cardboard and covered with cellophane for protection and stored away. They are beautifully detailed and I have seen these in the past which were framed – they really look great. The reverse also has some interesting content. This one is in very nice condition for being over 120 years old with no rips or folds – ideal candidate for framing.
