Product Description

This is a very nice grouping being offered, it is pair of metal shoulder scales along with a civilian tintype of the soldier that owned them. These brass scales were issued to Federal enlisted cavalry and some artillerymen (see period photograph). In addition to adornment, they were supposed to provide some protection to the men’s shoulders from strikes by a saber. The scales are attached to the pan and held with a thin iron sheet.

The tintype is of the veteran with his wife, probably circa 1880s – 1890s. These pieces remained together for the past 150 years, but unfortunately the identity of the soldier has been lost with time. Everything remains in good condition however there is some pitting and tarnishing of the scales; they probably could be cleaned up quite a bit, but I like them the way they are with an untouched patina. This grouping would look great either framed or in a display case.
