Civil War Officers Document/Map Tin with handle (SOLD)

Out of Stock

Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is a Civil War Officer’s Document Tin. It is made of soldered tin and measures 10 1/2" long, with a diameter of 2 1/2”, along with a flat bottom - all typical of mid-19th century manufacture. It also has a removable lid made from a small single piece of tin, coiled and soldered to the top. On the side is a soldered on tin handle. During the Civil War, communication would have to be done by sending documents between individual companies regiment headquarters.

A courier (usually a corporal or sergeant) would have to move between companies carrying orders and documents and needed a proper vessel to keep the paperwork dry and protected, these tin cases would work very well.

This unique tin is in great condition, only having some light surface rust which could be easily cleaned up. It would be an ideal piece to add to just about any type of Civil War collection - a hard to find document tin.
