Civil War era "School House" Inkwell

This is another unique piece being offered, it is a Civil War “School House” inkwell, described as such because of its shape. It is a "Snap-top" aqua inkwell; the jagged top is not a flaw, but the result of how they were made and crudely snapped off - some more even than others, but they were all used as long as a cork would fit in. It measures 2 1/4" x 1 ½” x 2 ¼” high.

There was a rapid increase in the consumption of ink during the Civil War, accompanied by the required bottles and inkwells to store the ink. Excluding slaves, the population of the United States enjoyed having one of the highest literacy levels in the world. This distinctive bottle is in nice condition, showing the crudeness of antique glass. There are some small letters on the bottom, “JA…”, but hard to make out.
