Civil War era "School House" Inkwell (SOLD)

Out of Stock

Product Description

School House shaped "Snap-top" aqua inkwell. The jagged top is not a flaw, but the result of how they were made and crudely snapped off - some more even then others, but they were all used as long as a cork would fit in. It measures 2 1/4" x 1 3/4" x 2" high. There was a rapid increase in the consumption of ink during the Civil War, accompanied by the required bottles and inkwells to store the ink. Excluding slaves, the population of the United States enjoyed having one of the highest literacy levels in the world. This unique bottle is in nice condition, showing the crudeness of antique glass. These inkwells go great with a display of soldiers personal effects, (particularly nice along side a letter).
