Product Description

This is another neat item being offered, it is a Civil War era gutta-percha inkwell. It has a screw-off top, a diameter of 1 ½” and is 2” high. In the mid-19th century, gutta-percha (hard rubber) became very popular. For the Civil War soldier, this was a great improvement over the usual glass inkwells – they closed tightly and there was no worrying of the glass breaking.

In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I have a similar gutta-percha inkwell pictured and I go into more detail about the importance of letter writing by Civil War soldiers (see pictures). There are no markings (typical of the mid-19th century) and it remains in very nice condition. It would be a great addition to a display of a soldier’s personal effects.
