Product Description

Civil War era Ginger beer bottle. This two-tone glazed bottle measures 8 ½” high with a diameter of 3”. Ginger beer was a type of alcoholic beverage, flavored primarily with ginger, lemon and sugar. It originated in England in the mid 1700s, and it reached its peak of popularity in the early 1900s. Depending on the processing, the alcohol content can be as high as 11%.

Ginger beer was a popular drink among Civil War soldiers. In The Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia, by Francis Lord, there are examples of Ginger Beer bottles, as well as in Excavated Artifacts of the Civil War, by Howard Crouch. They are also in the Civil War museum in Fredericksburg, Virginia and in Gettysburg. This bottle is in very nice condition, only showing signs for normal use....no chips or cracks, and having the typical manufacturing flaws. Actually the original cork remains inside the bottle. It would make a nice addition to a display of a soldiers personal effects.
