Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is a Civil War era Crucifix. It is made of brass and wood and measures approximately 3 1/4" x 1 3/4" and having the skull and crossbones on the bottom – typical of the mid-19th century. During the Civil War many soldiers were religious, especially the Irish, and were known to carry these types of articles. In the old Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum, a crucifix such as this one was found in the McPherson's barn (see pictures). The barn was used as a hospital during and after the battle.

There are the typical signs of extended use but overall it is in very nice condition - having a beautiful untouched patina. In my new book "The Civil War Soldier - His Personal Items", I go into more detail about the common soldier and religion. This unique piece comes in the glass top display case pictured.
