Civil War Cone Stoneware Inkwell

$55.00 $40.00
(You save $15.00)

Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is a Civil War era "Cone" pottery inkwell. It is made of brown pottery and is cone shaped. It measures approximately 3 ½” high and the diameter at the base is 2 ½”. There is a slight glaze, but it is uneven and sporadic (bottom unglazed).

There was a rapid increase in the consumption of ink during the Civil War, accompanied by the required bottles and inkwells to store the ink. In the mid-1800's, excluding slaves, the population of the United States enjoyed having one of the highest literacy levels in the world. Examples of these inkwells are in most of the relic books (see pictures). This inkwell is in very nice condition, with no chips or cracks. A nice display piece when used alongside a period letter and pen.
