Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War Artillery Friction Primer. The simple design consisted of two small brass tubes with a serrated wire. One tube would have fulminate of mercury and the other with black powder. Being sealed with shellac and wax, they were virtually waterproof.

Once the cannon was loaded, the friction primer would be inserted into the vent hole on the top rear of the cannon barrel. The lanyard, a long cord with a small hook on the end, would be attached to the loop of the primer and when pulled, the friction would send a spark into the chamber and ignite the powder bag sending the shell on its way. This unused (dropped) friction primer was recovered at the Stones River, TN Battlefield.
