Product Description

This is the nose section of a Civil War 10-pounder Parrott/Read artillery shell. It measures approximately 2” x 2 ½” x 1” and still has the threads visible where the fuse would be screwed in. It was recovered at Oak Hill – the area of the 1st days fighting at Gettysburg.

Oak Hill is the third highest point on the battlefield. It is to the northwest of town and dominates the fields to the west and north that were the scene of most of the fighting on the first day of the battle. Confederate possession of Oak Hill by reinforcements turned the tide of the battle and led to the collapse of the Union line and their retreat through Gettysburg to Cemetery Hill.

The piece is in very nice condition with no flaking or pitting. It has a light coat of varnish for preservation. This is a great piece of Gettysburg history.
