Artillery Shell Fragment from the Trostle Farm, Gettysburg, Rosensteel (SOLD)

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War artillery shell fragment from a Dyer shell. It measures approximately 3” x 2” with the distinct fuse threads remaining on the nose of the shell. It was found on the Trostle Farm at Gettysburg by Iva Rosensteel (see period photograph).

Major General Daniel Sickles used the farm as his headquarters after he advanced his Third Army Corps to the line of the Emmitsburg Road on July 2nd. He was wounded in the field to the west of the barn, where a monument now stands.

The Trostles were abruptly forced from their home during the fighting, leaving dinner on the table, which was enjoyed by Sickles’ staff. Like many of their neighbors, the Trostles returned to find most of their belongings looted or destroyed.

The 9th Massachusetts Battery had fought a desperate last stand on their farm, with at least sixteen dead battery horses just in the front yard and over a hundred on the farm. Damage to property and real estate was estimated at $2,500 in a claim filed after the war, but it appears no compensation was ever paid.

Iva was the sister of George Rosensteel (founder of the Gettysburg National Museum and the famous Electric Map) so the provenance could not be better. The Rosensteels were, of course, the most famous artifact collecting family in Gettysburg and the bulk of the relics are on display at today's Gettysburg National Park Visitor Center.

Several years ago, Iva’s daughter sold off most of her mother’s Gettysburg finds, and this shell fragment was one of those items. Iva was meticulous in recording the locations of the artifacts she recovered herself, and those which she acquired from local residents. This is a rare opportunity to own a well-documented piece from one of the most historic areas of the Gettysburg battlefield and it remains just as it came out of the ground. Artifacts from the Trostle Farm are very rare and highly sought after.
